John Bunyan was an English writer and Puritan preacher best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. Bunyan came from the village of Elstow, near Bedford. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons. After three years in the army he returned to Elstow and took up the trade of tin He had some schooling and at the age of sixteen joined the Parliamentary Army during the first stage of the English Civil War. As his popularity and notoriety grew, Bunyan increasingly became a target for slander and libel; he was described as \"a witch, a Jesuit, a highwayman\" and was said to have mistresses and multiple wives. In 1658, aged 30, he was arrested for preaching at Eaton Socon and indicted for preaching without a licence.
