That seems like a good way to let the reader know you mean business, but this is another instance in which knowing what goes on behind the scenes makes it all a little worse. Yet Cates work with Babyteeth and Redneck is generally interesting, but these are not properties with the kinds of extensive histories that the characters he has been given by Marvel have. They do a poor job of conveying emotion, narrative flow, and action, and that doesn't leave a lot of room for artistic positives. "Death of the Inhumans" #1 is a really great book--I didn't know quite what to expect, but I was riveted from page one till the end.
However, the meeting goes far from as planned, and an Inhuman executioner named Vox begins his bloody rampage across all Inhuman kind.I remember a criticism of the Ultimates line of comics being that they treated their characters like so much cannon fodder as a weak means of keeping the stakes high.
Well, the title's not kidding. Vox looks cool, but thats the best that can be said for this book. The numerous continuity errors and the deaths at the end of the issue create a very cruel tone for anyone invested in the Inhumans, the likeliest target audience for an Inhumans event maxiseries The art, while overall effective, does seem to struggle with close-ups of characters’ expressions from time to time Donny Cates is the hero marvel needs. It’s great! This book is epic, and is a fitting end for the Inhumans. The story makes so much sense and makes me think why hasn't this been done already. They work well with a book that focuses on narration. This collection isn't perfect, but I was really glad to see so much care put into the end of this era. Not a bad collection of comics by any means and most Inhumans fans should like it. Black Bolt is emotional and wounded, but resolute on action.
This book is epic, and is a fitting end for the Inhumans. We are given a refresher course on the origins of the Inhumans before being told that the Kree have called the Inhumans back once more. Black Bolt was oddly done. The art by Ariel Olivetti is super--I don't know if I've seen his stuff before, but this comic really looks great. Cates brings Black Bolt and his crew to a new place with them basically starting to be wiped out by the Kree. Interesting and tight storytelling, with loads happening but without a particular explanation 'why' so far, except for a few minor sentences. Pulling no punches, Cates wastes zero time in stacking up the casualties whether we're ready to experience them or not. I'm usually very picky when it comes to art but Ariel Olivetti does a really good job with the style chosen. And with the conclusion in The Death of the Inhumans #5, we’ve gotten an “event” comic that is tragically under the radar. That part took away from the emotion Cates was going for with all of the carnage.

On further reflection, imagine a Death of Asgard series where some new villain attacks Thor and his supporting cast as if none of the War of the Realms had happened (Thor and Volstaag back in their old identities, no mention of Malekith's schemes), and all the ongoing plot threads of the war will never be mentioned again.
