José Joyawas a Filipino painter best known for his Abstract Expressionist works which utilized a variety of techniques, including controlled drips, impasto strokes, and transparent layering. He pioneered abstract expressionism in the Philippines.
Most of Joya’s paintings of harmonious colors were inspired by Philippine landscapes, such as green rice paddies and golden fields of harvest. Joya’s diverse artistic career evolved from his early works influenced by his traditional education that emphasized figure drawings and portraits, to nonfigurative abstraction on large canvasses, and lastly to ceramic art.
It has been said that it was Joya who “spearheaded the birth, growth and flowering of abstract expressionism” in the Philippines. Sotheby's London
