You slide the battery compartment cover down towards the bottom of the remote and then lift the cover off. This uses the same IR (infrared) sensors that your Shaw remote control uses to communicate with the Digital Box.
On the BlueCurve remote I find that after sliding the cover down you have to lift the bottom end of the cover slightly upwards away from the body of the remote to release it from the remote.
