Take a walk along Poole Harbour and you’re unlikely to miss Brownsea Island. It’s an idyllic spot – a haven for wildlife, including a thriving population of the scarce and threatened red squirrel, wading birds and Sika deer. You'll see remnants of all of this on the island - with Pottery Pier still surrounded by shards of the ceramics that were once crafted there.
Brownsea Castle was first a private residence in 1726 for William Benson. The island is steeped in history. Its impressive natural habitat and fascinating past is a heady combination. The clay however was only suitable for bricks, drainage pipes and chimney pots and the Waughs fled to Spain bankrupt in 1857 but his legacy remains in the buildings he built, The Church, The Villa (now the HQ of Dorset Wildlife Trust) and the Farm (now the Visitor Centre). An Iron Age log boat was found off Brownsea in 1964, it’s now in Poole Museum.
The National Trust has a decent cafe on the island. Henry VIII had a blockhouse built in 1545, part of his south coat defences. The island is about a mile and a half in length and some three quarters of a mile wide.
In 1964 the National Trust, who had recently become proud owners of Brownsea Island, decided to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare in 1564 with an open air performance of one of his plays. Sir Humphrey Sturt came in 1765, improved The castle and built the first farm.

The Brownsea Island Scout camp began as a boys' camping event on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, southern England, organised by Lieutenant-General Baden-Powell to test his ideas for the book Scouting for Boys.Boys from different social backgrounds participated from 1 to 8 August 1907 in activities around camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving and patriotism.
