Logan's presidency is not off to a good start when he starts showing signs of fear. Jack's only hope of keeping the President's nuclear football (a computer containing the codes of America's nuclear facilities) out of Marwan's hands lies in two innocent campers who witnessed the crash of Air Force One. Secretary Heller tries to flush out the mole in CTU, but the evidence points in the wrong direction. Jack tries to talk Anderson out of the mission, but it is too little, too late as far as Anderson is concerned. The terrorists begin to threaten Audrey unless Heller confesses to "war crimes" on camera in an hour. To make room for these characters, other characters left. Jack and Audrey hide out with Tony Almeida after escaping from the terrorists and learn the man they are looking for is an employee for McClennan-Forrester. Directed by Jon Cassar.
Poorly placed shots by Chinese guards kill the Chinese consul and injure Jong. Over the phone, Jack Bauer hears the screams of his kidnapped sweetheart. It leads Jack to a complicit Chinese national, Lee Jong, hiding at his nation's consulate in Los Angeles. Jack creates a faux-hostage crisis in a convenience store trapping Kalil and several innocent bystanders to buy Chloe more time to get the surveillance satellite working properly.
CTU sends Curtis to intercept one of Marwan's subordinates, but a lawyer from Amnesty Global stalls the interrogation. As Jack closes in on Marwan and the missile's location, Chinese agents find proof that Jack Bauer invaded their territory. Logan clashes with Palmer. Meanwhile, Tony does some interrogating of his own, and Driscoll deals with devastating news.
Paul Raines dies in surgery when Jack insists that saving Lee Jong is a priority. He discussed the idea over the phone with producer Robert Cochran, whose initial response was "Forget it, that's the worst idea I've ever heard, it will never work and it's too hard". Driscoll and Curtis cover their tracks following the revelation about Marianne. He gets a call to report back to CTU, and, after a moment, acknowledges and drives away. The pilot of the fighter shoots down Air Force One, which crashes into the Mojave Desert, almost killing Chloe nearly loses her life finding a lead about the missile. Richard Heller becomes a suspect again and James Heller leads the interrogation. Marwan orders an underling to kill an Air Force pilot and his family and assume the pilot's identity. The storyline continues to follow the Los Angeles branch of CTU. Jack races to save Behrooz from his father when the situation turns into a hostage crisis. Tony discovers that Michelle is taking over command of CTU. to bring both of them in.
